Welcome to CHANNEL Z help page. If you would like to install your ie skins and logos via the registry, just follow these steps. If you are not familiar or feel uncomfortable using the registry to install the skins and logos, please download the freeware program, ie personalizer, from the XTRAS menu.
Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. I cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use this information provided at your own risk.
Step 1
From the START menu, select 'Run'
Step 2
In the dialog box type 'regedit' (no quotes). Click ok.
Step
3![]()
Locate the key [ HKEY_CURRENT_USER ] as shown below. Click on the + symbol to expand the directory.
Step 4
Locate the key Software and click on the + symbol to expand the directory.
Step 5
Locate the key Microsoft and click on the + symbol to expand the directory. Scroll down and locate the key Internet Explorer which is visible in the image below. Click on the + symbol next to the Internet explorer key to expand the directory.
Step
6![]()
Locate the key Toolbar and click on the folder icon. You will now see the following screen or very similar depending on your operating system and version of internet explorer. The only fields that need to be altered are the ones shown in purple.
Backbitmap = the image that is shown on your windows tool bar
BackBitmapIE5 = the image that is shown on your Internet Explorer tool bar
BrandBitmap = the big animated logo that ie uses when/if it needs to
SmBrandBitmap = the small animated logo that ie uses, usually the default one
**
NOTE ** You will need to add the following names to the registry if you want
to use the 'static' logo image when your browser is inactive.
BigBitmap = the big 'static' image to be displayed when ie is inactive
SmallBitmap = the small 'static' image to be displayed when ie is inactive
If the above names do not exist in the registry, create them from the registry menu Edit/New/String.
Note: Internet explorer versions earlier than version 5 will not have the BackBitmapIE5 name in the registry so whatever bitmap file is entered into the BackBitmap name will appear as your internet explorer skin.
Step 7
Edit
the data string required by double clicking on the corresponding name field, an
Edit String dialog box will appear allowing you to change the data. You MUST
enter the EXACT file name path to where the skin image or logo image is on your
computer. If it is not exact, windows/ie will use the default images. After you
have entered the file name path, click ok, exit the registry and restart
internet explorer. There is no need to restart your computer as the new setting
will take effect as soon as ie is run.![]()
The above procedure may sound slow and difficult at first, but when the registry is re-opened again, it starts at where you last left it, meaning only a few mouse clicks are needed to enter new image file names. You will soon be able to access the registry quicker than using most programs that do the same thing.
** Please note that in some versions of internet explorer (seems to be version 6) that you may need to re-boot your computer for the changes to take effect, rather than to just re-start internet explorer **
Again, this information is what I have learnt and found out myself. If anyone has any corrections to the above, I would be very happy to hear from you, just email me below.
Please, don't forget to go the Tricks & Tips Menu as there are a few things you will probably need to know there.
